I've had that mission as well, a few months ago. Same circumstances... a whole metric arseload of Griffins warp in, along with a few Blackbirds and Moas/Caracals. The mission almost cost me my ship, but I was able to warp out in time.

You must just have hit a string of bad luck/missions. I regularly get 1M+ total rewards from my Q-18 Lvl 3 agent in 0.8 space. I also get the odd 64k reward plus some planetary vehicles... it's all luck of the draw. I've gotten 4 Silence the Info...
